46 injured in Thursday'€™s protests

T

he Jakarta Police have said that 46 people were injured during Thursday'€™s protests at the Arjuna Wijaya monument, also known as the Horse Statue, in Central Jakarta on Thursday.

'€œAround 40 people suffered from sore eyes due to tear gas, but they were soon released from hospital after treatment,'€ spokesperson Sr. Comr. Rikwanto told reporters on Friday.

Rikwanto said two people were treated at the Cipto Mangunkusumo hospital on Thursday, one for a sprained ankle and the other for a facial injury, but that had already been sent home.

'€œThree people are still being treated at the Gatot Soebroto Army Central Hospital [RSPAD, Central Jakarta] for bruising,'€ he said.

One police officer was also injured in the scuffles, Rikwanto said, and received treatment at the Jakarta Police'€™s health center.

On Thursday the police fired water cannons and tear gas at protesters who attempted to breach barbed-wire barricades erected by police. The protestors were attempting to gain access to the Constitutional Court where the ruling in the presidential election dispute was being announced.
