Your letters: Praising learned judges

T

his is a comment on the article titled '€œKoran graft convict'€™s appeal refused'€, (The Jakarta Post, Aug. 25).

The judges got it right this time, after the culprits in the Religious Affairs Ministry had got away with their exploits for years. This time around, Ahmad Jauhari got eight years and another two years for appealing his case '€” a total of 10 years, ample time to read a fresh copy of the Holy Koran in his cell.

Our learned judges concluded there was a clear case of corruption, although they did not express the fact that Jauhari (as a Muslim) should be given more prison time because of his blatant disregard and disrespect for the Koran, where stealing didn'€™t appear to be a heinous crime!

Very soon we shall hear the corruption case of former religious affairs minister Suryadharma Ali, who is accused of stealing millions belonging to devout Muslims who have registered for trips to Mecca. I hope the KPK prosecutors mention to the court that as a former religious affairs minister, he has a very heavy price to pay for stealing.
