rganization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) secretary-general Iyad Ameen Madani said he appreciated Indonesia for being a country where democracy, Islam and modernity walked harmoniously amid the presence of radicalism in the region.
'The OIC secretary-general thinks Indonesia could be a role model for other OIC countries because it is a model for 'modern' Islam and could become part of a solution,' Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa said as quoted by Antara on Thursday.
He was speaking after accompanying President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono ,who met with the OIC secretary-general on the sidelines of the 6th United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) in Nusa Dua, Bali.
Marty said OIC countries should work together to promote the true teachings of Islam .
In the meeting, he said, President Yudhoyono and the OIC secretary-general discussed cooperation in the fields of education and human rights. In the education sector, they discussed measures to increase capacity, including by providing scholarships from and for people in OIC member countries.
On the human rights issue, Marty said OIC hoped Indonesia could continue to play different roles to strengthen the human rights commission.
Indonesia has been a member of the OIC since 1969. Other member states are Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Qatar, Albania and Brunei. (dyl/ebf)
