Indonesia to raise illegal spying issue at global Internet forum

C

ommunication and Information Technology Minister Tifatul Sembiring isscheduled to represent Indonesia at the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) inIstanbul, Turkey, next month, where he will raise the issue of illegal Internetsurveillance.

Tifatul stated that Indonesia fully supported global efforts to respect privacy.

'€œIllegal spying through the Internet is a very regrettable thing. We would not tolerate our neighbors drilling a hole in the wall and learning the secrets of our household. This behavior makes us more suspicious of each other,'€ he said in a statement on Tuesday as quoted by Antara news agency.

He said that the Internet should be put to more productive uses, such as for the development of the economy.

Regarding the use of the Internet for economic development, Indonesia was committed to helping achieve the World Summit on Information Society (WSIS) targets at the forum, which will run from Sept. 2 to 5 this year, he added.

'€œHowever, Internet use still has to abide by the respective country'€™s values and regulations,'€ he said.

The 2014 IGF will adopt the '€œConnecting Continents for Enhanced Multi-Stakeholder Internet Governance'€ theme.

"We are supporting every effort which promotes respect between countries and stakeholders," he continued.

Indonesia has introduced the "healthy internet'€ scheme supported by multiple

stakeholders.

The program includes human resources and technology developments such as in telecommunications and content application.

"It is an important program to avoid reliance on other countries," he said. (dyl/nfo)
