he Indonesian and Singaporean governments are scheduled to sign a new agreement delineating their sea borders during a visit by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to Singapore from Tuesday toThursday, a presidential spokesman has said.
The presidential spokesman for foreign affairs, Teuku Faizasyah, said on Tuesday in Singapore that the signing would be a strategic move to resolve border issues between the two nations, calling it 'a monumental achievement'.
Among issues in the agreement is the two countries' eastern border limits. The two nations signed an earlier agreement in March 2009 on the western border limits.
'The next [after the signing] will be a border resolution that includes a third nation, which is Malaysia,' Faizasyah was quoted as saying by Antara news agency, adding that Indonesia signed an agreement recently with the Philippines on the same issue.
Teuku said the President hoped that Indonesia's resolution on its border limits with several countries could become a reference to agree on the same issue with Singapore.
'We hope that this momentum will improve our bilateral ties,' Teuku said.
Yudhoyono and First Lady Ani Yudhoyono as well as a number of ministers will stay in Singapore untilThursday.
On Wednesday, Yudhoyono is scheduled to meet President Tony Tan Keng Yam and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Long. He is also expected to receive the First Class Order of Temasek merit for his contribution to the development of the countries' bilateral ties during his 10 years as president. (fzm/nvn)
