Your comments on president-elect Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo'€™s plan to cut the fuel subsidy soon after he is officially inaugurated as president after President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono refused to implement the unpopular policy.

It is good news. But do it gradually. Eventually, subsidies should be given only to public transportation vehicles and cars under 1500 cc.

Eddy Arjuna Zainy

Cutting the subsidy is a dzolim (cruel) policy.

Please think of other ways to aid the state budget without cutting the subsidy.

Muhammad Ilman

In my view, it'€™s OK to increase fuel prices, but education, health and public transportation for citizens must be affordable.

Bi Goez

Cutting the fuel subsidy may not be popular, but it is the right thing to do. The next step is to take control of the state-owned energy companies: Pertamina, BP Migas and Petral.

Ning M Widjaja

The proposal to cut the fuel subsidy should be rejected.

Wihelmus Willy

It'€™s too late for this lame duck to deal with such a crucial decision. All Yudhoyono needs to do is maintain supply sides in his remaining days as president.

We are very glad that the transition team has begun to prepare the ground for reducing the subsidy. Let'€™s hope that soon after his inauguration, the new president can bring about the regulation without too much difficulty.

It'€™s true that if Jokowi raises the fuel price, more than a hundred trillion rupiah can be saved. But there should be parallel strategies to balance the possible negative impacts.

Jokowi'€™s team needs to consider the future difficulties that will face fishermen and farmers. Would these people still be able to operate their fishing boats and tractors if diesel prices substantially increased?

If the operational costs of farmers and fishermen increase, the prices of commodities such as fruit, vegetables and fish will rise as well. Will people tolerate such a situation?

If Jokowi does not have a strategy to deal with these potential problems, he should not rush into raising fuel prices.

At last! It is a reason to increase the salary and allowance of workers, if the government wants to cut the fuel subsidy.
