Motorist dies after collision with armored convoy

A

motorcyclist died on Thursday when she tried to overtake an armored convoy on Jl. Samas in Bantul, Yogyakarta. The motorist, who died en route to the nearest hospital, was later on identified as Hanifah Kurniawati.

Septiningsih, a witness to the incident, said Hanifah'€™s motorcycle was right in the front of hers when she moved to overtake the convoy, but failed to do so.

'€œShe attempted to overtake the convoy but she hit another motorcycle and was thrown from her bike. Then she was hit by one of the convoy vehicles,'€ Septiningsih told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.

She added that she herself had suffered minor injuries when she ran into Hanifah's stationary motorbike.

Bantul Traffic Police chief Second Insp. Boedy Haryanto explained that the accident had occurred when the five-vehicle armored convoy was traveling down Jl. Samas to Gadingsari, Bantul, for a training session.

According to the police, one of the armored personnel carriers had hit the victim as she - and other riders - tried to weave in and out of the carriers to overtake them.

Because the accident involves Indonesian Military (TNI) personnel, the case authority has been handed to military police. However, the case will not be pursued as the victim of the accident died as a result.

'€œWe will continue to coordinate with the military police. Because a motorist died, one of the things we must oversee is any compensation payment,'€ Boedy said.

Meanwhile, Major Munasik, spokesman for the O72/Pamungkas Yogyakarta district military command (Kodim), said an investigation would be launched to determine whether any of the soldiers had caused the accident. (dyl/dic)
