nknown assailants threw two Molotov cocktails at a traffic police post in Tello, Makassar, South Sulawesi, early on Sunday, causing minor damage and no injuries.

Makassar City Police chief Sr. Comr. Fery Abraham said the perpetrators comprised five people riding on three motorcycles, but their identities were unknown.

"We'€™re still investigating who the perpetrators were. Although they were riding motorcycles, we cannot confirm that they are part of a motorcycle gang," he said.

Fery said that aside from this incident, traffic police officers had faced no problems, nor had any threats been received.

There were two policemen on duty at the time of the attack, Brig. Muhammad Safri and First Adj. Insp. Jumadir. Both were shocked to hear two blasts at about 3:30 a.m. local time (2:30 a.m. Jakarta time).

They exited the post and saw fire razing the post's right wall, as well as spotting the five perpetrators. The policemen did not pursue the five as they had to extinguish the fire.

The post is manned around the clock as it is located at the busy intersection of Jl. Urip Sumohardjo and Jl. Perintis Kemerdekaan. The area is also prone to traffic accidents. (nvn)
