Text your say: Ahok quits Gerindra Party

strong>Your comments on the decision of Jakarta Deputy Governor Basuki '€œAhok'€ Tjahaja Purnama to quit the Gerindra Party as he could not accept the party'€™s attempt to end direct elections for governors, mayors and regents:

Ahok'€™s move to leave Gerindra deserves appreciation. We need more people like him, who believe in the power of the people and is ready to fight corruption.

Gerindra may say it did not see any Ahok contribution to the party, but the party will regret saying it when its vote drops in the next elections.

Ahok, who is legally going to take over the job of Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo as a governor, is a risk-taker. Because his conscience could not accept his party'€™s efforts to change the law on the election of regional authorities, he immediately resigned his membership of Gerindra.

His example of resigning from his party is now being followed by a lot of regents and mayors. If the reformed new democratic system does not work, why don'€™t we just go back to the original 1945 Constitution as designed by our founding fathers?

His resignation has been particularly passionate at times, he seems to be no longer standing on the same ground as his party; his party'€™s latest move has contravened his conscience. Literally he is consistent; he is not just brave, he is determined. Ahok has shown to us that he has more than repaid our faith in direct elections by the people.

Ahok is the leader who dares to show he is different when he is current. Ahok believes party members should control the party and shouldn'€™t be dominated by the party. After all his career, why should he allow his party to control him when the party is being utilized as a tool to exploit the nation'€™s fools?

If only most party members are as daring and caring as Ahok, the nation will have a better chance to survive the present, not drying up like an unwanted plantation.

I think Ahok is one of the politicians in the country who have a firm stance. I believe that a lot of Jakartans will appreciate his decision to resign from membership of Gerindra.

There are two sides to the coin. It'€™s OK. Ratu Atut Chosiyah'€™s case is just one of many corruption cases in connection with direct elections. Nothing and nobody'€™s perfect. There is no evidence in developed countries that direct elections are better. We are still in the era of trial and error.

Ahok, be yourself. That'€™s what Gen. Abdul Haris Nasution and Gen. Hoegeng Iman Santoso did. God bless.

SBY'€™s indecisive stance

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has hinted that he could support the proposal to maintain the direct election of regional heads, but the Democratic Party chairman has not ordered the legislators of his party to support it in the upcoming House of Representatives plenary session.
