Alleged terrorist arrested in Central Java

N

ational Police spokesperson Comr. Gen. Agus Riyanto revealed Wednesday that its Densus 88 counterterrorism squad had arrested an alleged terrorist in Purworejo, Central Java, on Tuesday.

'€œDensus 88 has arrested Chandra, also known as Arif Suharto, who is allegedly involved in a terrorist network,'€ Agus said, as quoted by Antara news agency.

He said that the police had arrested Chandra near his home in Pangenrejo district as he was going to a traditional market to sell soybean milk.

Agus said that the police had detained Chandra at Purworejo Police precinct and confiscated his motorcycle as evidence.

Chandra has been one of the police'€™s most wanted terrorists in the country since 2004. He allegedly hid terror suspects Noordin Mohammad Top and Azhari Husin from the police.

Noordin was killed during a 16-hour siege at a house in Temanggung, Central Java, in 2009. Meanwhile, Azhari, a top Jemaah Islamiyah bomb maker, was fatally shot by counter terrorism forces in East Java in 2005.

The two terrorists were involved in the attack on the J.W. Marriott Hotel Jakarta in 2003 and a blast outside the Australian Embassy in 2004 in Kuningan, South Jakarta. (alz/nfo)(++++)
