The United Development Party (PPP) has decided to hold a national congress in October to elect a new chairman.
Recently dismissed PPP chairman Suryadharma Ali said at his office on Tuesday said that the congress would be held on Oct. 23 to 26 after the inauguration of president-elect Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo and vice president-elect Jusuf Kalla.
Suryadharma said the national congress would be attended by 1,300 party members from all provinces.
Suryadharma's deputies dismissed him in an executive meeting last week, arguing that his status as a suspect in the haj fund graft case had tainted the party's image. The party executives then appointed one of the deputies, Emron Pangkapi, acting chairman until the national congress.
A few days later, Suryadharma fought back by dismissing his deputies, saying that their mechanism to unseat him was unlawful.
'If [they claim] regional chapter leaders support Emron Pangkapi and [secretary-general Romahurmuziy], it's not a big deal as that's only 68 people, while we have almost 1,000 people in our subchapters,' he said; as quoted by Antara news agency.
He appointed Ahmad Farial committee leader of the national congress.
