fter questioning members of President Susilo BambangYudhoyono'€™s inner circle, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK)questioned on Wednesday the former chairman of House of RepresentativesCommission VII overseeing energy and natural mineral resources, SutanBhatoegana, as a witness for graft suspect and former energy and mineralresources minister Jero Wacik.

Sutan was questioned about allegations that House Commission VII, which oversees the energy ministry, knew about the extortion allegedly committed by Jero.

'€œYes, I was asked about extortion at the ministry, but I told the investigators that I knew nothing about it because it was not in our authority to supervise the ministry'€™s internal affairs,'€ Sutan told The Jakarta Post after three hours of questioning.

The antigraft body has moved to charge Jero with extortion for allegedly forcing his subordinates to collect funds of Rp 9.9 billion (US$828,868) from '€œillegal sources'€ within the ministry between 2011 and 2013. The KPK added that Jero had also funneled part of the dirty money to what it called '€œthird parties'€.

The KPK said it was also looking into the possibility that Jero may have extorted money from officials at the ministry'€™s agencies, namely the Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Special Task Force (SKKMigas) and state energy company PT Pertamina.

Both SKKMigas and Pertamina have gained a reputation as cash cows for the House and ministry.
