Traditional market, homes catch fire

A

fire broke outTuesday evening at Parangtambung Market and a nearby upscale housing complex onJl. Daeng Tata in Parangtambung subdistrict, Makassar, South Sulawesi.

Four people were injured in the fire, including kiosk owners Alamsyah and his wife, Fitriani, who suffered severe burns. Eighty-two of the market'€™s kiosks and 15 houses were destroyed.

The fire started in Alamsyah'€™s kiosk in the front section of the market. The kiosk sells gasoline, kerosene and gas. According to an eyewitness, Muhammad Jafar, 58, the fire was triggered when Alamsyah poured gasoline into small bottles and his wife lit a candle to seal plastic bags filled with animal feed.

Local neighborhood head Sustoni Rahmat said around 60 families had been displaced.
