As women make the most of their temporal youth, they race to maintain their good looks or manufacture one.

Technology has helped define beauty by creating youth through a regimen of products and procedures that are changing faces — and also the way women feel about their appearance, from the outside in.

However, these products don’t come cheap.

Noted dermatologist Lilik Norawati, popularly known as Doctor Nora, said that the most common complaints coming from patients were acne, blemishes, wrinkles and sagging skin on the face.

“Those are the most common problems where treatment could actually be done at home with the right products and consultation with medical professionals.

“It’s advised not to use products offered on online, because we’re not sure about the contents, as the products are not registered with the Food and Drugs Monitoring Agency (BPOM).”

There are new methods of facial improvements and rejuvenation that go beyond the use of creams and beauty products.

The procedures that might even prevent the face from aging include injecting, sculpting and lasering.

Alysha Salon & Day Spa in Jakarta, for example, offers a package of facial and hair treatment up to Rp 580,000 (US$55), while Elite Clinic sets Rp 90,000 for basic facial treatment and Rp 1.5 million for brow-weaving — the latest trend introduced by South Korean drama actresses and singers.

Popular non-invasive treatments nowadays are microdermabrasions, or chemical skin peelings, adult braces and LASIK surgery to correct astigmatism.

Although there is no data on how many Indonesians willingly went under the knife in the beauty race; breast augmentations, liposuction, rhinoplasty, eye lifts and facelifts are still among the most common plastic surgeries on the menu.

At Ultimo Clinic Aesthetic & Dental Center, according to detik.com, a breast implant procedure costs up to Rp 50 million, while stem-cell breast augmentation is tagged at Rp 96 million.

For rhinoplasty, or a nose job, prices range between Rp 9 million and Rp 21 million, depending on what kind of correction is needed. The procedure to remove chubby cheeks costs Rp 12 million at the clinic, while chin sculpting costs double.

Nora gave caution on both invasive and non-invasive cosmetic procedures, especially the ones offered at beauty salons.

'€œAvoid undergoing medical cosmetics treatment by incompetent people to prevent unwanted side effects,'€ she said.

There have been media reports of mistreatment at beauty parlors that has led to disfiguration or even death.

Neither money nor the misfortunes of others are concerns in the beauty race, which has made the business of beauty parlors and spas among the most lucrative.

Khoerussalim Ikhsan, an observer on franchise businesses from Entrepreneur College said that beauty salons would mushroom in the coming years, with the existing ones offering franchise opportunities.

'€œThe phenomenon is in accordance with high public demand for the service for facial and body treatment,'€ he said as quoted by Kontan daily in June.

Doctor Nora, however still cast doubts on the common belief that looking great could make a person feel great as well.

'€œAll women are born beautiful. What'€™s left for them to do is to balance their exterior and inner beauty. To enhance exterior beauty, just treat your skin without overdoing it.

'€œIt is worth to note that beauty has age. It'€™s strange if a middle-aged woman wants the beauty of a teenager,'€ she said.
