ince the opening of the Jakarta-Bandung toll road in 2005, Jakartans have been flooding the neighboring city of Bandung with cars on weekends, prompting Bandung Mayor Ridwan Kamil'€™s announcement of plans to utilize cable cars and a monorail in Bandung in an effort to increase efficiency.

'€œJakarta residents who go to Bandung by train [will be able in the future] do so by cable car and monorail, which is currently in the bidding phase [...] the campaign should be started early, so I need Pak Ahok'€™s help to promote this, as his voice as the [soon-to-be] governor will be heard by residents,'€ Ridwan said, referring to Jakarta Deputy Governor Basuki '€œAhok'€ Tjahaja Purnama, after a recent meeting between the two leaders.

Ridwan, who has led the West Java provincial capital for a year, said that in addition to the monorail, Bandung would also be sprucing up tourist facilities.

'€œWe are building a sky walk and planning to add tourist buses. Bandung will become better next year,'€ he said.

He added that he had persuaded state-owned railway company PT KAI president director Ignasius Jonan to increase the frequency of the Jakarta-Bandung train departures.

'€œTourists contribute to Bandung'€™s economy, so of course we welcome Jakarta residents to Bandung. We only hope that tourists can also help keep Bandung clean,'€ he said.

According to Ridwan, six million Jakarta tourists visited Bandung annually.

KAI spokesman Agus Komarudin said, however, that the company had not yet planned increase the number of trains departing for Bandung from Jakarta.

'€œFor now, supply and demand is at balance. We will adjust supply in accordance to the demand,'€ he said.

Currently, KAI operates nine return trips from Jakarta to Bandung for the business and executive classes. The company adds trips to the schedule during peak season.

'€œOccupancy reaches 80 percent on weekdays and 100 percent on weekends,'€ he said.

Ahok said that Jakarta would also benefit from the proposed transportation project. '€œIf there were a light rail [train] connecting Jakarta to Bandung, people who live in Bandung could work in Jakarta,'€ he said.

In the meeting, the two leaders also shared their views on other programs and initiatives.

Ridwan said that regional leaders were striving to find new ways to share thoughts and experiences.

'€œNow we [have a BlackBerry messenger group] consisting of five or six regional leaders, including me, Pak Ahok, Banyuwangi Regent [Abdullah Azwar Anas] and [Bogor Mayor] Bima Arya,'€ he said.
