ndonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) executive Puan Maharani said that her party had no rule stating that its chairperson had to be a descendant of the nation's founding father and first president, Sukarno, who is also her grandfather.
She made the statement in response the appointment of her mother, Megawati Soekarnoputri, the second child of Sukarno, as the chairwoman of the PDI-P on Sept. 20 during the party's national congress in Semarang, Central Java.
Megawati, who found PDI-P in July 1998, will continue to lead the party through 2020.
'[A rule requiring that the PDI-P chairperson must be a Sukarno descendant] is not written in our AD/ART [rules of association],' Puan said as quoted by kompas.com.
The appointment, she said, was aimed at maintaining popular support for the party, especially at the grassroots, as many are fans of Sukarno.
Unlike Puan, Tjahjo Kumolo, the party's secretary-general, previously said that the PDI-P had to be led by a descendant of Sukarno.
'A descendant of Bung Karno has to lead this party as long as this party exists,' he said. (alz/nfo)(++++)
