Anas Urbaningrum gets eight years in prison

A

panel of Jakarta graft court judges has sentencedformer Democratic Party chairman Anas Urbaningrum to eight years in prison and finedhim Rp 300 million [U$25,095] for his role in the Hambalang sports complexgraft case.

The court has found Anas guilty of corruption and money laundering related to the construction of the Hambalang sports complex in Bogor, West Java, and other state projects.

'€œShould Anas fail to pay the fines then he will get an additional three months in prison,'€ presiding judge Haswandi said as he read out Anas'€™s verdict on Wednesday, as quoted by kompas.com.

There were reportedly two out of five judges who shared dissenting opinions on this verdict.

Anas is also obliged to pay Rp 57 billion in restitution within one month or the court will instruct the prosecutors to confiscate his assets.

The panel stated in its consideration that Anas had failed to set a good example as both a public official and party chairman. Anas, the panel went on, had also failed to support the spirit of society in fighting graft.

The panel also stated that there had been sufficient evidence that demonstrated Anas had used the bribe money from the Hambalang case and other government projects to fund his campaign to become the Democratic Party chairman in 2010.

In the Hambalang case, the KPK has already named two other suspects, including former youth and sports minister Andi Mallarangeng and Dedi Kusdinar of the same ministry.

The verdict is a far cry from the earlier sentence requested by the prosecutors, who demanded Anas receive 15 years in prison and reimburse Rp 94 billion and US$5.2 million to the state. The prosecutors had also requested Anas be stripped of his political rights. (dyl/dic)
