police officer has said that six IndonesianNavy (TNI-AL) personnel were killed in a road accident on the Dupak toll road in Surabaya,East Java, on Thursday. 

Deputy Tanjung Perak Port Police chief Comr. Mustofa said the accident, which involved a trailer truck and a Navy vehicle, was currently being investigated by the police, the Navy and toll-road operator PT Jasa Marga.   

Mustofa explained that the accident had occurred at 6:15 a.m., when the Navy truck, which was carrying 21 passengers and traveling at more than 80 kilometers per hour, lost control due, according to preliminary findings, to a flat tire and hit the trailer truck, which was in a stationary position on the shoulder.

 '€œThe driver of the trailer truck is being questioned by police,'€ Mustofa told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.

He said the Navy truck was en route from Mojokerto, East Java, to the Navy's Eastern Fleet Command port in Surabaya to help prepare for the upcoming 69th anniversary of the Indonesian Military (TNI).  

The Navy'€™s Surabaya spokesperson, Maj. Rohman Arif, said the Navy had not yet determined the cause of the crash, but he confirmed that the truck's driver and front-seat passenger had both been killed in the accident.   

'€œThe injured passengers were taken to the Dr. Oepomo Naval Hospital in Surabaya. Four of them died of their injuries there. The remains of the deceased have been given to their respective families,'€ Rohman said.

The identities of the dead personnel are Chief Sgt. Joko, First Cpl. Sunoko, First Sgt Katirin, Warrant officer Soejono, Chief Sgt Bambang and First Sgt. Mahmudin.(dyl/dic)
