he toll road project linking Kuala Namu Airport in Deli Serdang regency, North Sumatra, with provincial capital Medan and Tebing Tinggi city officially broke ground on Tuesday.
The toll road, which will stretch for 61.8 kilometers (km), will become the second turnpike in North Sumatra, following the Belmera (Belawan-Medan-Tanjung Morawa) turnpike.
Public Works Minister Djoko Kirmanto said the Medan-Kuala Namu-Tebing Tinggi toll road project would be carried out in two stages. The first stage will be a 17.8 km section linking Medan-Perbarakan-Kuala Namu, while the second 44 km section will link Perbarakan with Tebing Tinggi.
'The initial stage of the project will cost Rp 4.07 trillion (about US$354 million), while the second stage will cost Rp 5.6 trillion,' Djoko said in his keynote speech during the ground-breaking ceremony in Lubuk Pakam, Deli Serdang, on Tuesday.
Djoko said the government expected the project to be completed by 2017.
North Sumatra Governor Gatot Pujo Nugroho said residents in the province were looking forward to the toll road's completion. He added its presence was expected to spur economic growth in the province.
