Investigative team conducts reenactments of clash

A

joint investigative team carried out reenactments of a clash between the Indonesian Military (TNI) and police officers on Saturday and Sunday. The first reenactment was conducted at a fuel-storage facility and the second in front of the Riau Islands Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) headquarters.

Riau Police chief spokesman Adj. Sr. Comr. Hartono told The Jakarta Post on Monday that the reenactments wrapped up on Sunday.

'€œThe reenactments were completed by the joint team. We are not aware of any further developments,'€ said Hartono, who also declined to comment on the number of TNI-police personnel undergoing examination by the team in the case.

One of the joint team members who demanded anonymity said the reenactments were conducted in two versions, one by members of Battalion 134 Tuah Sakti, which was carried on a few days ago, and the police version on Sunday.

'€œToday'€™s reenactment will be synchronized with the previous one to find the truth. We will be able to detect the truth by analyzing photos taken where the incident took place by using a panoscan camera, which can provide more details,'€ the source said as quoted by tribunnews.com on Sunday.

Tribunnews reported that in the reenactment on Sunday, members from the Riau Islands Police Special Crimes Directorate fired shots from within a Nissan X-Trail sport utility vehicle as they left a diesel fuel storage facility at the Cipta Asri housing complex in Tembesi, Batam, Riau Islands.

The police officers fired the shots as they were surrounded by Tuah Sakti Battalion members during an attempted raid on the diesel fuel storage facility. The black X-Trail was attacked as the police tried to escape from the scene and a TNI member was shot in the leg.

Earlier, other police officers who tried to secure evidence in the form of illegal diesel also fired shots at the location as they were surrounded by a number of TNI members. The warning shots were fired several times and hit another TNI member in the leg.

Later, the police officers escaped the mob and fled to Brimob headquarters for protection.

Based on the reenactment, two TNI members were shot.

Tribunnews also reported that, according to another reenactment at the Brimob headquarters later that day, a Brimob member who was guarding the entrance to the headquarters was hit in the face by a TNI member.

A clash ensued in front of the entrance. One of the Brimob members fired several warning shots, some of which were directed at the ground, ricocheted and hit a TNI member.

Two TNI members arrived on the scene to meet with the Brimob deputy chief to pick up their colleagues involved in the fight. After they picked up their colleagues and were about to leave, gunshots were heard, followed by a blackout. Then, the fourth TNI member was shot. After that, a number of other TNI members arrived and a
nearby car wash and shops were razed.

Earlier, National Police deputy chief Comr. Gen. Badrodin Haiti said the joint investigative team was expected to complete its task in the next two weeks.

Meanwhile, in Medan, Bukit Barisan I Military Command chief Maj. Gen. Istu Hari Subagio was replaced by Maj. Gen. Wiston P. Simanjuntak. Istu was transferred to TNI headquarters in Jakarta as a special staff member to the TNI commander.

Wiston said the rotation was merely a tour of duty and tour of area in the military organization. He denied that the rotation was related to the clash between the TNI members and police officers in Batam.
