Five politicians fail to be inaugurated as new lawmakers

H

ouse of Representatives secretary-general Winantuningtyastiti revealed that five politicians would not be inaugurated on Wednesday as new lawmakers in the House of Representatives for the 2014 to 2019 term because they had allegedly been involved in graft.

The five politicians, whom the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has named graft suspects comprise Jero Wacik of the Democratic Party, Iqbal Wibisono of the Golkar Party, Idham Samawi, Herdian Koesnadi and Jimmy Demianus of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P).

Winantuningtyastiti said the instruction to cancel the five suspects'€™ inaugurations came from President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who will leave office on Oct. 20.

To the General Elections Commission (KPU), Yudhoyono sent a letter ordering the cancellation of the inauguration of the five graft suspects. The KPU then sent the letter to the House, she said.

'€œI received the letter from the KPU at 2 a.m.,'€ she said on Wednesday as quoted by kompas.com.

The KPK previously criticized Yudhoyono because as of Monday (Sept. 29), he had yet to respond to a letter sent by the KPU, which had asked whether the five politicians would still be inaugurated on Oct. 1 despite the graft allegations

Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) researcher Ade Irawan said that Yudhoyono'€™s slow response to the KPU'€™s letter reflected his weak opposition to corruption.

'€œIt'€™s clear that SBY doesn'€™t walk the walk. In fact, we'€™re tired of saying that he has failed to tackle corruption; his lack of response to the KPU'€™s letter is just one more indication of this. The public is already well aware,'€ Ade said. (alz)
