he General Elections Commission (KPU) has postponed the inauguration of two Regional Representative Council (DPD) members as President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono decided to delay issuing their installation decrees following their involvement in legal problems.
'Based on the Presidential decree we received last night [Tuesday evening], 130 DPD members will be inaugurated today. The inauguration of two other DPD members is delayed, however, due to their involvement in legal problems,' said KPU commissioner Ferry Kurnia Rizkiansyah as quoted by Antara news agency in Jakarta on Wednesday.
The two DPD members are Chaidir Jafar of West Papua and Zulkarnaen Karim of Bangka Belitung.
Ferry said the postponement of the two DPD members' inaugurations was a response to a request submitted by the KPU to President Yudhoyono, asking him to delay issuing the members' installation decrees so that they could focus on resolving the legal problems they were facing.
'Their inaugurations will be delayed until we get a court ruling that is final and binding. This is not a cancellation but a postponement. Thus, they are still DPD members-elect,' said Ferry.
Chaidir was one of 44 members of the West Papua Legislative Council (DPRD) for the period of 2009-2014, the Papua Corruption Court has declared him guilty of misusing Rp 22 billion (US$1.8 million) from the Papua provincial budget for 2011.
Meanwhile, Zulkarnaen was named a suspect in a graft case centering on the illegal conversion of assets belonging to the Pangkalpinang administration. (ebf)(++++)
