Russian tourist goes missing on Mt. Sibayak

A Russian tourist was reported missing Wednesday from a hiking trip on Mount Sibayak in Karo regency, North Sumatra.

The local police and search and rescue (SAR) teams have joined forces to find Aleksei Vasechko, 28.

Karo Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Albert Sianipar said that the SAR efforts were still ongoing and involved 18 police officers and SAR members.

Albert said the team was tracing the track it believed the Russian tourist had taken while he was hiking on Mt. Sibayak.

'€œUntil this afternoon, we still hadn'€™t received any report from the team. The search is still ongoing,'€ Albert told The Jakarta Post over the phone when contacted from Medan on Wednesday (1/10).

Albert said the information on the missing Russian tourist came from the Sibayak inn keeper, where Vasechko had stayed. The tourist had been staying in Sibayak since Saturday. He left to hike Mt. Sibayak on Monday at 7 a.m.

'€œThe plan was he was going to check out Tuesday but until today [Wednesday] he hadn'€™t returned,'€ said Albert.

The police chief said that Vasechko was from St. Petersburg in Russia.

The joint SAR team leader, Ady Pandawa, said the team had tried tracing the path they believed Vasechko had taken, but there was still no sign of the missing tourist.

'€œToday'€™s search started from KM 54 area and Mt. Pintau. There is still no result,'€ said Ady, adding that the search would continue on Thursday. (tah/nvn)(++++)
