While children in many poorer parts of the country suffer from malnutrition, Jakarta is seeing an increase in cases of overnutrition.
'The trend is [an increase in] overnutrition cases among children aged five and under, and also among older children,' secretary-general of the Indonesia Medical Nutritionists Association (PDGMI), Yusnita Anie, told reporters at the Healthy School competition awards event held by food and beverage company Nestle Dancow at City Hall on Wednesday.
'Overnutrition can lead to degenerative diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, which could eventually lead to a stroke,' Anie said. 'It might be a case of the mother not receiving adequate nutrition during pregnancy, or, after birth, the child might eat too much, especially junk food, without getting enough exercise,' she said.
