SBY issues Perppu to defend direct election of regional leaders

P

resident Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has issued two governmentregulations in lieu of law (Perppu) aimed at defending the direct election ofregional heads, which was abolished and replaced by indirect elections during aHouse plenary meeting several days ago.

'€œI have signed Perppu No.1/2014 on the Election of Governor, Regent and Mayor and it will replace Law No. 22/2014 that stipulates the election of governor, regent and mayor by Regional Legislative Council (DPRD),'€ Yudhoyono told a press conference on Thursday night, as quoted by kompas.com.

Yudhoyono said that in order to provide the action with legal standing, he also issued Perppu No.2/2014 to amend Law No.23/2014 on Regional Administration. In essence, he added, the second Perppu would revoke the rights of the DPRDs to elect regional leaders.

Yudhoyono said the issuance of these regulations had proved that he was in solidarity with most of the people who were disappointed with the recent move of the House that had revoked the people'€™s political right to elect their leaders.

Yudhoyono, who is also chairman of the Democratic Party, would hand down the regulations to the House of Representatives. The House was given 30 days to study the regulations. If these regulations were accepted then the House would pass them as the new laws, replacing the existing laws on regional administration and on the election of regional leaders that allowed only indirect votes.

Previously, both Yudhoyono and his party had been showered with public criticism since they were both considered to have violated the people'€™s political right to vote for regional leaders. (dic)
