Workers plan massive demo over fuel price

T

he Confederation of Indonesian Workers Union (KSPI) has said it would take to the streets on Thursday to demand a pay hike and to protest the plan to raise fuel prices.

President-elect Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo has indicated he would raise the price of subsidized fuel soon after taking office.

KSPI president Said Iqbal said around 50,000 workers from the Greater Jakarta area would take part in the demonstration, which will begin at the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle in Central Jakarta.

'€œThe workers will protest the plan to raise the fuel price, demand a 30 percent pay raise and free medical treatment and reject the outsourcing of the labor-recruitment system,'€ Iqbal said on Wednesday.

He said workers would march to the State Palace in the morning and proceed to the office of the Jakarta governor, the House of Representatives and the labor ministry, according to Antara news agency.

Some protestors are also planning to march to the head office of PT Freeport to ask the government to halt operations at the US copper and gold mining giant'€™s plants.

Workers will also call on the government to arrest the president director of Freeport for a string of mining accidents that have resulted in he deaths of a number of workers.
