New MPR speaker New MPR speaker: Zulkifli Hasan (center) of the Red-and-White Coalition, which nominated candidate Prabowo Subianto in the July 9 presidential election, was chosen as speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) at a plenary session in Jakarta early on Wednesday. Zulkifly, accompanied by deputy speakers (from left to right) Hidayat Nurwahid (from the Prosperous Justic Party - PKS), Mahyudin (Golkar Party), Oesman Sapta Odang (Regional Representatives Council - DPD), and EE Mangindaan (Democratic Party) took the oath in front of Supreme Court Chief Justice Hatta Ali. The decision to name Zulkifli was held through voting, where the Red-and-White Coalition garnered 347 votes, while the coalition of president-elect Joko “Jokowi” Widodo got 330 votes. Only one vote was in abstention.
