round 40 percent of 390 hectares of paddy fields in Rorotan, Cilincing, North Jakarta, are under threat of drought because of the lack of water during the dry season.
The chairman of the Rorotan Farmers' Association, Abdul Kadir, said that the extreme heat and the long dry season were likely to affect the associations' fields and harvest this year because the farming area relied on water from the Rorotan irrigation system, which has dried up.
'We've just planted and the rice plants need water to grow. We have been unable to deal with the extreme heat and the long dry season, which have caused the water supply to drop,' beritajakarta.com quoted him as saying on Saturday.
Head of the North Jakarta Agriculture Agency Khairul Siddik said his team would visit the area to investigate the water supply problem.
'We are facing difficulties getting water supplied to the area. Next year, we will purchase two portable water pumps to help Rorotan farmers,' he said.
