Kalla Group builds docking port, power plant

T

he Kalla Group, a business group owned by the family of vice president-elect Jusuf Kalla, is building what is claimed will be the biggest docking port for ships in eastern Indonesia, as well as a hydro-powered electricity generation plant. Both are to be in Makassar, South Sulawesi.

Jamal Manrafi Daud, marketing operations manager of Kalla Group subsidiary Bumi Lintas Tama, said the port would be built on a 100-hectare parcel of land in Suppa, Pinrang regency, in partnership with a Japanese maritime company.

'€œThe infrastructure needs of the maritime sector has pushed us to try out this business,'€ Kalla Group president director Fatimah Kalla said on Friday, as quoted by tribunnews.com, without disclosing the value of the investment.

Meanwhile, because of higher electricity demands, the Kalla Group'€™s PT Poso Energy will continue developing its Poso hydro plant project, which is expected to generate a total of 1,125 megawatts (MW) of power.

The group first began with the 120 MW Poso 1 and 195 MW Poso 2 development projects and will continue with the 180 MW Poso 2 extension project in 2015, said Asri Syahrir, Bukaka Group manager for the Eastern Indonesia area, on Saturday, as reported by tribunnews.com.

In the longer run, the group is planning to build the Poso 3 project with a 630 MW capacity. The overall 1,125 MW of electricity would be channelled half to South Sulawesi and the other half to Central Sulawesi.

The company has budgeted Rp 7.2 trillion (US$594.8 million) to be spent on the hydro power plant development project.
