RI shall redeem glory as maritime country, says Jokowi

P

resident-elect Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo said he would focus on improving Indonesia'€™s maritime sector for the good of the nation at his swearing-in-ceremony at the People'€™s Consultative Assembly (MPR) on Monday.

'€œWe have long been turning our back to seas, bays and straits. Let'€™s redeem our glory as a maritime country. Jalesveva Jayamahe. On the sea we are glorious,'€ said Jokowi in his first address as President on Monday as quoted by Antara news agency.

'€œWe shall develop our ancestors'€™ spirit as tough sailors who were brave to cross the ocean. Let'€™s fly the sail. I'€™m standing here under the command of the people and the Constitution," Jokowi said.

During his seven-minute written speech, Jokowi said he was sure that Indonesia could become a creative nation able to contribute to the nobleness of the world.

'€œ['€¦] I believe that we can strengthen [our nation] and attain an authoritative voice. I will make sure that all people in all areas across the country can enjoy the fruit of developments. All institutions must work on their duties,'€ the President added.

Jokowi was sworn in as the seventh Indonesian president at a plenary meeting of the People'€™s Consultative Assembly (MPR) at 10:30 a.m. on Monday.

Former Indonesian presidents '€“ Baharudin Jusuf Habibie, Megawati Soekarnoputri, and Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono '€“ and Jokowi'€™s former rival during the July 9 presidential election, Prabowo Subianto, attended the inauguration ceremony.

In his speech, Jokowi called on Indonesian citizens to work hard together with the government to realize development programs for the benefit of the nation.

'€œTo all fishermen, workers, farmers, bakso (meatball) vendors, hawkers, drivers, academics, teachers, military and police personnel, businesspeople and professionals, let us be united and work together for this country,'€ Jokowi said.

He also expressed his commitment to improving international relations, saying Indonesia would be a friendly economic partner and would seek to play a significant role in the maintenance of world order and security.

'€œAs the third-most populous country in the world, the largest Muslim country in the world and the largest nation in Southeast Asia, we will maintain a free and active politics toward the international community for the sake of national and global order based on social justice, peace and independence,'€ he said.
