ttendees of an event celebrating the inauguration of President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla in Surabaya, East Java, will release 700 lanterns into the sky at the city's Surya Park on Monday.
Surabaya Deputy Mayor Wisnu Sakti Buana said some of the volunteers had held their own celebrations at the city's Mundu Park, instead of Surya Park. The event, which began at 5 p.m., prepared up to 100 food vendors to serve food to the event's attendees.
The release of the lanterns in Surabaya will simultaneously commence with lantern releases in Jakarta, Medan, Jayapura and Makassar, which aim to break an Indonesian Museum of Records (MURI) record.
'A total of 17,700 lanterns are planned to be released nationwide. Surabaya will release 700,' Wisnu said on Monday as quoted by Antara news agency.
He added that local residents gathering at the event were also waiting for a scheduled teleconference between them and President Jokowi at 7 p.m., which would be screened at Surya Park.
'There will be a spontaneous question and answer round with the President during the this,' he added. (dyl/nfo)(++++)
