ali is experiencing a drop-off in footwear exports due to the global economic downturn affecting European buyers like the Netherlands, Germany and Italy.
Bali Industry and Trade Agency data has revealed a 2.09 percent decline in the island's footwear exports, down to US$1.55 million over the first eight months of the year from the $1.58 million recorded in the same period last year, Antara news agency reported.
The decline in footwear exports is significant, as the industry is one of the province's primary small and medium enterprises (SMEs) commodities.
ast year, footwear exports contributed 0.45 percent to Bali's total exports, which stood at around $341.81 million.
'The condition nowadays is different from three to four years ago when the market to export footwear was very healthy. Today's market is sluggish, but footwear producers still survive,' Putu Yasa, a Denpasar-based exporter said on Tuesday as quoted by Antara.
He said he was concerned that footwear exports would continue to drop due to the lack of economic recovery in Europe and the US.
'We still see good performances in the garment and handicraft exports at the moment, but not for shoes and sandals,' he said. (tah/nfo)(+++)
