watchdog says the Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo and Jusuf Kalla administration's Cabinet-formation process, which has involved the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (PPATK) and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), should be viewed positively.
'Jokowi's efforts to involve the PPATK and KPK should be regarded as positive because he needs those two institutions,' Donal Fariz, a researcher with the ICW's legal and judicature monitoring division, said as quoted by Antara news agency in Jakarta on Tuesday.
He said during the formation of his Cabinet, it was unlikely that Jokowi would be able to ensure the clean track records of the ministerial candidates he wanted to appoint.
'He [Jokowi] also has idea of financial transactions conducted by the ministerial candidates and any legal problems in which those candidates might have been implicated,' said Donal.
He said it was odd to see comments that claimed involving the PPATK and KPK in the Cabinet formation was just another of Jokowi's image projections.
'Such an involvement is good and related to corruption eradication so this must be supported,' said Donal.
He added that Jokowi's biggest challenge was not over his decision to involve the PPATK and KPK but how far he would follow up information he received from the two institutions.
'This will become a problem if ministerial candidates who receive red reports from the PPATK and KPK are still appointed. His initiative would then be a mere formality,' said Donal. (ebf)(+++)
