ambi has recorded 31 cases of sexual violence against children between January and October, with the figure likely to rise due to ongoing reports being dealt with by the police.
'Based on data from the Jambi Police's women and child protection unit, during January to October, 31 sexual violence cases with victims aged under 18 occurred in the province,' said Jambi Police chief Sr. Comr. Kristono on Tuesday.
He said sexual violence against children in Jambi had occurred due to various factors, with unlimited access to information and weak parental monitoring being the two biggest factors.
'Children's easy access to the Internet and poor parental monitoring are the main causes behind the high number of sexual violence incidents against children in the province,' said Kristono.
He said many children now had smartphones, making it easier for them to search for information on the Internet.
The Jambi administration's head of women and child protection and community empowerment sub-division, Agus Santoso, said 125 cases of sexual violence against children had occurred in the province in 2013.
He said his agency was collecting relevant data from regencies and municipalities across the province.
'I do not yet have data on the total number of sexual violence cases against children for this year, but I predict the number will be higher,' said Agus. (ebf)(+++)
