n executive from the Islamic-based United Development Party (PPP) has insisted that the party's national congress in Surabaya, East Java, last week was legal.
The congress elected secretary-general Muhammad Romahurmuziy as party chairman, replacing Suryadharma Ali, who is currently facing corruption charges by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).
Deputy secretary-general Isa Muchsin said the Surabaya meeting had been sanctioned by the party's sharia board.
'The sharia board ruled that a national congress must take place before Oct. 20 and the Surabaya meeting between Oct. 15 and Oct 17 was the only meeting,' Isa said as quoted by tribunnews.com.
Isa added that the national congress had also met the quorum for participants.'The congress saw 866 of 1,244 party executives with voting rights attend,' he said.
The election of Romahurmuziy, however, has not healed the rift within the party. Suryadharma has insisted on holding a national congress to reassess the party's direction and leadership after the inauguration of President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo.
That congress is scheduled for Oct. 23.
