Tons of trash left behind after '€˜People'€™s Party'€™

he '€œPeople'€™s Party'€ festivities celebrating the inauguration of President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla resulted in tons of garbage being left around the National Monument (Monas) complex.

'€œA lot of people attended the party and unfortunately they were not instructed to put their garbage in the bags [that had been left out for the collection of garbage],'€ said acting Jakarta governor Basuki '€œAhok'€ Tjahaja Purnama at City Hall on Tuesday as quoted by tribunnews.com.

The Monas management deployed 150 workers to clean up after the party and the Konser Salam 3 Jari (Three-finger salute concert) on Monday.

'€œWe have a total of 300 sanitation workers at the moment and today [Tuesday] 150 of them are cleaning the Monas area,'€ Monas services head Heri Margono said on Tuesday as quoted by Antara news agency.

In addition, the head of the Jakarta Sanitation Agency, Saptastri Ediningtyas, said her institution had assigned more than 100 workers and deployed 22 garbage trucks to clean up Monas and other areas such as Gambir, Central Jakarta on Tuesday.

She estimated the party resulted in around 100 tons of garbage, a similar amount of garbage was collected following the Jakarta Night Festival, an event where people took to the capital's thoroughfares to celebrate Jakarta's anniversary. (tah/nfo)(+++)
