Jokowi should be clean and consistent, not dictated to by political party: Expert

P

olitical expert Wimar Witoelar has said President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo must be a leader who is clean, consistent, hard working and free from any political-party influence, as his supporters expected.

'€œIf he is still the Jokowi who we have gotten to know, he will be successful,'€ said Wimar, who is also the founder of the Perspektif Baru (New Perspectives) Foundation.

He was speaking during a discussion held by the Perspektif Baru Foundation, Konrad Adenauer Stiftung and the University of Diponegoro in Semarang, Central Java, on Wednesday.

Wimar said Jokowi was elected president due to his image as an Indonesian with a good character rather than an Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) member. The former spokesperson of the late former president, Abdurrahman '€œGus Dur'€ Wahid's administration, added that Jokowi's political career was born from inside the party, but he was elected president based on the people'€™s support.

'€œIbu Mega [PDI-P chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri] herself has said that she is handing Jokowi over to all Indonesians,'€ Wimar said, adding that he believed that the House of Representatives would support Jokowi and Vice President Jusuf Kalla's development programs.

Wimar went on to say that even if there was opposition, it was all part of the political developments following the election of a president and vice president.

'€œThe opposition comprises parties that suffered losses during the election. However, no Indonesian is set to lose with the election of Jokowi as the Indonesian president. They will never suffer a loss if they support the government programs that are correct and criticize mistaken ones,'€ he said. (ebf)(+++)
