Delay in Cabinet announcement an effort to pick 'clean' ministers: Populi Center

P

ollster Populi Center political observer Nico Harjanto said on Thursday that he appreciated the decision made by President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla to delay the announcement of their Cabinet.

On Wednesday evening, Jokowi postponed the announcement, which was previously expected to take place at Tanjung Priok port in North Jakarta.

Nico said that such a delay showed that the duo were not rushing the Cabinet selection process.

He said that he believed that Jokowi and Kalla were exercising caution in selecting Cabinet members because they wanted to pick individuals who were not only clean from graft allegations but also had capacity and integrity.

'€œAlthough the delay indicates that there are political interests at play, it shows that Jokowi and Kalla are serious in selecting a Cabinet that is in line with the people'€™s expectations,'€ he said as quoted by kompas.com.

On Wednesday, Kalla said that he and Jokowi had encountered difficulties identifying individuals with the requisite capacity, credibility, experience, leadership and track record to become ministers.

Kalla added that he wanted to get clean ministers and had asked the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (PPATK) to help screen candidates.

Jokowi said that the KPK had submitted its findings and that eight candidates had been red-flagged by the commission for being at high risk of being named a graft suspect. He promised that he would remove the eight names from his list of ministerial candidates. (alz)
