How the Dow Jones industrial average did Wednesday

tocks fell broadly on Wednesday, snapping a four-day winning streak for the Standard & Poor's 500 index, as investors shaken by recent swings in the market sold some of their holdings. A drop in the price of oil dragged down energy stocks. Small-company stocks also fell as traders unloaded riskier assets.

On Wednesday:

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 153.49 points, or 0.9 percent, to 16,461.32.

The S&P 500 500 fell 14.17 points, or 0.7 percent, to 1,927.11.

The Nasdaq composite fell 36.63 points, or 0.8 percent, to 4,382.85.

For the week:

The Dow is up 80.91 points, or 0.5 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 40.35, or 2.1 percent.

The Nasdaq has added 124.41 points, or 2.9 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is down 115.34 points, or 0.7 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 78.75 points, or 4.3 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 206.26 points, or 4.9 percent. (***)
