our comments on the hundreds of thousands of people who took part in an unprecedented street celebration on Monday to welcome President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla into office, signaling their high hopes for the new leaders:

Yes, a new leader is a new hope, of course.

Gusti Ngurah Kade Hariawan

Yes, Jokowi and Kalla are those coming from common people.

Ferril Irham Muzaki

Millions of Indonesians in Jakarta and across the country held a merry festival to welcome their new president, Jokowi.

It means that the new government holds a strong mandate from the people and is trusted by them.

Jokowi has listened to the aspirations and grievances of the people.

They hope that the new government will seriously eradicate corruption, eliminate poverty and overcome other problems like poor infrastructure.

Other people'€™s demands include improving the quality of education.

Sinaga Harbili

It'€™s good to see Indonesian people aware of the situation in their country and looking forward to some much-needed changes.

For once we may see a healthy and more homogenous relationship/cooperation between the population and the government.

Philippe Marland

The feeling of happiness in welcoming the new president is fine.

However, the ceremonies should be simple and citizens should have not littered at public facilities.

Bi Goez

Jokowi promised many things in his presidential campaign. People understand that it takes some time to fulfill those promises.

But there are issues that people just can'€™t wait for, such as: easy access to education, easy access to medical care, cheap staple foods, a rise in minimum pay.

The Jokowi administration should focus on delivering those promises within a short period of time, say 100 days.
