T

he inaugural SoundsFair music festival is set to roll on Friday afternoon, providing a weekend escape in Jakarta with a mix of pop, rock and electronic music shows from foreign and local artists.

SoundsFair is a new festival produced by the Java Festival Production (JFP) company, which has been producing and organizing the annual Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival, Java Rockin'€™land and Soulnation Festival for the past decade.

At least 87 performances will take place on the festival'€™s nine all-indoor stages at the Jakarta Convention Center in Central Jakarta from Friday until Sunday. Of the shows, 67 will feature established and rising Indonesian musicians, with the remainder by international musicians.

Among the international artists to perform are Canadian reggae fusion band MAGIC!, American band The Jacksons, Australian pop singer Cody Simpson, British electronica band Asian Dub Foundation, Japanese jazz-ska band Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra and Dutch electronic dance music DJ Mark Kneepers. A special hall will also be provided for electronic dance music performances.

MAGIC!, which has been hitting the top of charts worldwide with its single '€œRude'€, will headline the festival on Friday, while the legendary The Jacksons are set to headline on Sunday.

JFP president director Dewi Gontha said that although the company decided not to organize the Java Rockin'€™land and Soulnation festivals this year due to the recent elections, SoundsFair was not meant to take their place.

'€œSoundsFair has a completely different concept to the other two. Next year we will return with Rockin'€™land and Soulnation, as well as SoundsFair,'€ Dewi said on Thursday.

Daily Pass tickets are sold at Rp 352,000 (US$29) while a 3-Day Pass is Rp 814,000, excluding additional tickets for special shows, which range between Rp 55,000 and Rp 82,500.

Angga Wardhana, the festival'€™s program director, said SoundsFair would host artists from various genres, mostly indie musicians.

Established Indonesian musicians to perform at the festival include garage-rock band BRNDLS, pop trio RAN, singers Ari Lasso and Ipang, hard rockers The S.I.G.I.T., indie icon SORE, rock duo Monkey to Millionaire and electronic-pop act Homogenic.

Angga said the festival would also feature many new and rising Indonesian musicians. '€œWe think it is important to give these musicians a stage so they can get wider recognition.'€
