he Jakarta Corruption Court rejected on Thursday a defense plea made by Riefan Avrian, the son of Democratic Party executive chairman Syariefuddin Hasan, ruling that his graft trial would continue.
In his defense plea, Riefan said he should be tried for a civil case rather than a criminal one.
'We need first to establish whether there is evidence in this trial to support a civil case. So, we decided to reject his defense plea,' presiding judge Nina Indrawati said on Thursday.
The Jakarta Prosecutor's Office has indicted Riefan for masterminding a scheme to rig a Rp 23 billion (US$1.9 million) state project that was overseen by his father's office, the Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises Ministry.
Prosecutors accuse Riefan of collaborating with officials at Syarief's office to award his company, PT Imaji Media, the tenure to procure jumbotrons (giant-screen TVs) for multimedia digital advertising, which caused Rp 5.3 billion in state losses.
Riefan, who owns another company called PT Rifuel, appointed his office boy, Hendra Saputra, as Imaji Media's director to keep his name off the records.
Hendra has been sentenced to one year in jail for his role in the case.
