akarta Police investigators are looking into the ownership of @triomacan2000, a Twitter account that has allegedly been used to defame and extort individuals.
'We continue to investigate the account ownership because it has quite a large number of owners,' Adj. Comr. Hilarius Duha, head of the cyber crime subdirectorate at the police's special crime investigation unit, said as quoted by Antara news agency in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Hilarius said the police had received a number of reports complaining of libelous remarks from the Twitter account. However, he said it was difficult for the police to trace the whereabouts of individuals responsible for the comments, which allegedly violated the 2008 Information and Electronic Transaction (ITE) Law.
Hilarius went on to say that the police were striving to investigate the Twitter account ownership after they busted one of the account's administrators, Edi Saputra, who had allegedly made libelous remarks against a state telecommunication firm PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom) official.
It was said Edi had allegedly extorted the Telkom official via libelous statements he posted on @triomacan2000.
Hilarius said police investigators had evidence of phone conversations between Edi and the state-owned enterprise official.
The two had met in Tebet, South Jakarta, on Tuesday evening. Edi was caught accepting around Rp 50 million (US$4,118.62) in cash from his target. (ebf)(+++)
