Police undecided over arrested Singaporean'€™s fate

A

police official says the police are still questioning Singaporean Lim Yong Nam,who was arrested at Interpol'€™s request over alleged involvement in abetting terrorism.

'€œThe choices are whether to extradite this person to Singapore or send him to the US for further questioning. We are still discussing the matter with US authorities,'€ National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Boy Rafli Amar said on Wednesday.

Batam Immigration Agency officials arrested Lim during a regular check at the Batam seaport last week. According to immigration, Lim'€™s name was included on the police'€™s wanted persons list.

Lim and three other people were arrested in 2011 for smuggling US-made radio devices commonly usually used in bomb-making from Singapore to Iran. The three other people were found guilty and extradited to the US for further processing. Lim, however, was declared innocent by the Singaporean court.

However, the US authorities remained convinced that Lim was also guilty and requested Interpol'€™s help to arrest him.

Gavin Chay of the Singaporean General Consulate in Batam said the consulate was providing assistance for Lim.(dic)
