Despite strong opposition from human rights activists, President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo has officially appointed former Army chief of staff Ryamizard Ryacudu as defense minister.

It seems like the Army has much more influence than other groups. We need more from the Navy and Air Force.

The defense minister should be a civilian, not another New Order general.

A civilian defense minister wouldn't be respected enough by the Army, especially when the generals are seeing their influence wane as their budgets and numbers are axed, which follows any plan to prioritize the Navy.
Do you think there will be no backlash to that by the Army's officers? Who else but an Army man can keep them in line through all that?
Who else could have gone to China other than former US president Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger?
