esidents living along the banks of the Gung River in Tegal regency and the Comal River in Pemalang regency, both in Central Java, have been advised to remain alert regarding the start of the rainy season in November as rainfall is expected to carry volcanic material from nearby Mount Slamet.
Sudrajat, the head of the Mt. Slamet observation post in Ganbuhan village, Pulosari district, Pemalang regency, Central Java, said both rivers passed through a number of districts in both regencies.
'Residents must be alert especially regarding the Gung River, which is located on the northern slopes of Mt. Slamet,' Sudrajat said by phone on Thursday.
Mt. Slamet, the second tallest volcano on Java Island, has been placed on alert level since Aug. 12. Pemalang Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) head Wismo said his agency would build a makeshift embankment of sandbags along the Comal River to anticipate floodwaters carrying volcanic material.
