Elephant fatally tramples farmer in Jambi

n elephant has run amok on an oil palm plantation in Pematang Pauh village, Tungkal Ulu district, West Tanjung Jabung regency, Jambi, killing a farmer, identified as Bahtiar.

On Friday, Bahtiar, 62, went to investigate his plantation after learning that an elephant had been spotted. Upon arriving, he was chased by the elephant and eventually died from injuries sustained after being trampled.

'€œBahtiar died with bruises on his face and a broken right leg,'€ Jambi Police chief Brig. Gen. Bambang Sudarisman said on Saturday.

To avoid clashes with elephants, Bambang urged residents to avoid areas where elephants were likely to pass and to establish neighborhood security groups.

'€œTo manage the elephants, we will also coordinate with the Natural Resources Conservation Agency and related parties,'€ he said.
