he Agency for the Placement and Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (BNP2TKI) revealed on Wednesday that two Indonesians believed to be the victims of brutal murders in Hong Kong were not migrant workers.
BNP2TKI head Gatot Abdullah Mansyur said that based on the agency's investigation, one of the victims, Sumartiningsih, went to Hong Kong on a tourist visa, while Seneng Mujiasih, who was also known as Jesse Lorena, was a former migrant worker.
'Sumartiningsih went to Hong Kong through a social-cultural visa, while Lorena was an overstayer, a former migrant worker,' Gatot said as quoted by Antara news agency.
'Both of them were not registered in our migrant-worker database. That is why we are having some difficulties in tracking their backgrounds.'
He further said that although neither of the women were registered as migrant workers, the agency would still give assistance to their families, in terms of legal processes and the repatriation of their remains.
'Currently, BNP2TKI and the Foreign Affairs Ministry are still processing the repatriation of [the victims'] remains,' he added.
Sumartiningsih and Jesse were allegedly killed by 29-year-old British banker Rurik George Caton Jutting in his apartment.
Jutting has been arrested by Hong Kong police and was taken to a preliminary hearing on Monday. A pre-trial hearing will be held on Nov. 10. (ask/nfo)(+++)
