oordinatingPolitical, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Tedjo Edhy Purdijatno says hehas sent Army Chief of Staff (Kasad) Gen. Gatot Nurmantyo to Batam in order tobring an end to the clashes between members of the Army'€™s 134 Tuah Saktiinfantry battalion and the Police'€™s Mobile Brigade (Brimob) personnel.

'€œKasad has been deployed to Batam in order to restore order immediately. We will have a thorough evaluation after this,'€ Tedjo told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.

He said those who were involved in the shootings would definitely be questioned and would likely to face dismissal. He added that he would also evaluate the leadership given the fact that the second clash occurred right in front of I Bukit Barisan Military Command chief Maj. Gen. Winston P Simanjuntak, who had initially visited Batam to restore order.

'€œWe will also evaluate the local leadership to decide what to do next,'€ he said.

When asked whether there was a possibility of replacing the local military leadership as a consequence of the ongoing conflict, Tedjo said, '€œThere is always a possibility for that.'€

According to Tedjo, the conflict dated back to the September 21 incident where a group of police officers, backed up by Brimob personnel exchanged fire with a group of people who were assisting fuel smugglers in Batam.

Later it turned out that those people were soldiers from the 134 Tuah Sakti infantry battalion.
