enior Golkar Party politician Priyo Budi Santoso held a meeting on Tuesday with Yogyakarta Governor Hamengkubuwono, raising speculation that the former deputy speaker of the House of Representatives is looking for an endorsement for his bid for the party chairmanship.
Priyo said he held the meeting late on Monday and claimed that his visit to the palace was non-political.
'We only talked about Golkar in passing,' Priyo said as quoted by tribunnews.com.
Priyo is considered one of the strongest candidates for the party chairmanship due to be contested at the national congress scheduled for January.
In a survey released on Thursday, the Poltracking Institute found that Priyo topped the list of the most electable chairmanship candidates with an average score of 6.51 points, followed by senior party executive Hajriyanto Y. Thohari with 6.31 points.
Incumbent chairman Aburizal Bakrie came second from bottom with 5.61 points, performing slightly better than lawmaker and former head of the party's East Java chapter Zainuddin Amali, who received 4.98 points.
